Visual influence on Psychology

Let me keep this subject simple and precise. With the latest news of death sentence given away to those four involved in Delhi Gang rape, I was very happy. Ofcourse with a few more appeal to Supreme Court and other procedures left, the hanging date will come only after a few months. But me and my friends already shared a toast through SMS, Whatsapp, Facebook and other mediums. Then I was wondering, what made them actually to commit such a heinous crime? This is what sparked my mind. It is evident that media and movies have some way contributed to a person’s behaviour in the society, not just the rapists but all. Certain programs, advertisements promote women as objects of sexual desire. As it is understood that these men who committed rape are lay men, they must have surely been watching adult movies. It is well said by prominent psychologists that what people watch is what they do, mostly! My simplest question remains thereby, what are we going to do to make sure that our younger generation don’t fall prey for such crimes? Are we all not collectively responsible as a society? I am not at all willing for any such thing to happen again. I have family, sisters, friends and loads of other freedom willing girls in my country. I want my India to be seen as a safe place by foreigners. A few months back the Australian Government declared certain places in India as unsafe in a public notice. I think we must respond to the world in a better manner. All that is needed for today’s date is just a tweak in the media and our society. Plus a little self conscious watch of boys and men about what they are upto. Above all, it is upto us to behave ourselves in a day by day basis. Also, girls need to be careful about who they are friends with. Simple! :)

Love and Care,
Naren Pillai.
